Benefits of becoming a member of Scarborough Hospitality Association

Scarborough Hospitality Association was formed in 1923 with the objective to provide Scarborough, it’s accommodation providers, restaurants, cafes and other hospitality enterprises with support and advice through the many changes in regulations and legislation and has been doing so ever since. We passionately believe that Scarborough is not only the first seaside resort but the very best and we aim to use our influence to promote our wonderful town at every opportunity.

The benefits of being a member of a longstanding and well respected organisation are:

Representatives of SHA sit on the Tourism Advisory Board which reports directly to Welcome to Yorkshire and are also active contributors to the Forum for Tourism. These are important platforms for SHA to voice its views and be noticed. We support our members on issues that are relevant to their businesses and the future of Scarborough and ensure our opinions are broadcast through social media, local radio and newspaper interviews. We encourage participation in tourism workshops that bring together the businesses of the town and ‘brainstorm’ ideas which can make the town a better place.

As a large organisation, we negotiate numerous discounts for our members including a 2% retrospective rebate on all purchases over £100 per week and special offers from Booker Wholesale (payable 6 monthly), 10% discount on all purchases over £100.00 from Dunelm Mill including sale items, 5% discount at Calvert’s Carpets to name but a few.

The SHA is a member of National Associations such as British Hospitality Association, English Association of Self Catering Operators, Welcome to Yorkshire , Discover Yorkshire Coast and Scarborough Chamber of Trade and Commerce and receive regular updates about changes that affect us. We distribute this information to our members and, if necessary, organise workshops and talks to help members understand and implement them. We also have close links with many training companies and local colleges that can provide courses on a variety of subjects at either subsidised or discounted rates.

We offer our own Local Inspection Scheme conducted by qualified and independent assessors as an alternative to the National Inspection Schemes. At £25 it is a more cost effective option that is very popular with our members and recognised by the Scarborough Borough Council’s Tourism Services, Discover Yorkshire Coast and Welcome to Yorkshire.

Our peak periods are very busy and we aim to keep our members up to date with regular e-mails about what is going on around the area as well as a monthly electronic copy of our newsletter. However, once things quieten down we organise a monthly get-together at a variety of venues to enjoy a coffee, a good gossip and share our ideas and experiences. Many of our meetings are held at places which are unknown to some and are often hidden gems!

The Discover Yorkshire Coast Holiday Guide is produced by Scarborough Borough Council in association with Welcome to Yorkshire and the Scarborough, Whitby and Filey Hospitality Associations. Members of the Hospitality Association enjoy the best discounted advertising rates for the guide and around 85,000 copies are printed and distributed all over the UK every year.
